What this skill is

Possessives come in two flavours and children need both. One kind sits in front of the thing owned: my shoe, her coat, their house. The other kind stands on its own, with no noun after it: that one is mine, this is hers. Same idea, different word shape, and the second kind is later.

What to expect

"Mine" arrives early and gets used for everything, including as a subject ("mine is broken" for "my one is broken"), which is fine. Expect "hers" and "theirs" to be late, and expect invented forms like "hisself" or "mines" - those are the pattern being applied, not a lack of it.

Try this at home

Sorting laundry or toys by owner does this work without any worksheets: whose is this? That is hers. These are mine. The answer is genuinely unknown to you, which is what makes the child produce the form rather than repeat it.

When to refer

No possessives at all by 3;6, or no standalone forms (mine, hers, theirs) by about 5.
